We are all about building our fences.
You can’t come in if…
or you’re white,
if you’re poor,
if you don’t live like me,
if my friend doesn’t like you,
if I don’t ever see you pick up a Bible,
or maybe you pick up your bible too much,
I really don’t care, you just can’t come in.
Want to hear an oxymoron?
We, (Americans, Foreigners, Christians, Atheists, You in the blue shirt, you in the red, this generation, this 2017 human race) we LOVE to Hate. We love the gossip about our friends. We love hearing about the gossip of strangers. We love when we turn on the news and people are fighting. We love to log into our facebooks and our twitters and spew our opinion on those fights pretending all of our hate is all in love.
We need to stop building our fences and start extending our tables because I don’t know what Bible you are reading but my God never said “You [insert any race/person here] are above [insert opposite race/person here]” and never ever did our God instruct you to hate one another. He says to hate what is evil. Evil is satan, sin, temptation, unlawfulness. Yet we all seemed so focused on hating each other that we dig ourselves so deep into sin and unlawfulness just to express the unprecedented hate.
“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28
“For God shows no partiality.” Romans 2:11
My little brother likes to tell me this story he heard once during a sermon. It is about this beach where every night, hundreds of starfish are washed up and left to die. Each morning on the way to school a boy stops by and puts a few back into the water. One day a neighbor asked him “Why do you do this? You can’t save them all, so why does it matter?” The little boy responded by picking up another starfish, placing it in the water and saying “It matters to that one.” The next day the man joined the little boy, and as they continued on each day, the crowd grew. Everyday they were able to save more and more because that boy knew that even just 1 matters.
I tell you this story because even though I know hate is a result of lack of God in a person’s heart, I know that it is a part of life and no matter where you are hate will exist, I also know that this blog will reach at least one person. It’s you.
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12
“If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.” 1 John 4:20-21
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12
Racial tension has been a very real thing for a very long time, but lately it has been at an all time high. Currently there are White Nationalist Rally’s & Counter Protests going on and as shocked as I shouldn’t be based on the past I am completely 1000% shocked at the amount of hate in one place. The problem is everyone involved genuinely thinks they are “right and just” in their hatred towards the other. I don’t speak of politics, never have. I don’t usually speak on topics like this either and it was always because I thought by speaking on such subjects you had to be on a side and I am not. Hate is hate. I am not confused about that and I genuinely don’t understand why the rest of the world is. Race is something man made up, there are no 2 different colors, there are only shades of one color. Color of Skin has everything to do with genetics, just like hair, eyes, the shape of your nose, etc. Now doesn’t it sound crazy to hate someone because of the shape of their nose? God made humans. God said love your brother and sister, he didn’t say just the ones in the same shade as you.
“For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.” Deuteronomy 10:17-19
“Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.” Acts 10:34-35
“But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.” James 2:9
“Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.” 1 Peter 2:17
“The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:31
Every time you practice love and show hospitality, you are picking up that starfish and throwing it back into the water. This is how you expand God’s kingdom. It is through love in which one witnesses. That is what people will notice, until they too decide to join. Racism is a man-made concept and really not a fun one. I like God’s instructions much better. This is how Satan keeps you distracted guys. We stay so caught in the news and the “oh my gosh I can’t believe she said that! I can’t believe he did that!” that we forget about God altogether. This world is temporal. Please don’t let these abritrary fights and the noise of ignorance and hate cause you to lose the ultimate battle, the battle for your soul. Be Wiser. Do Better.
